“She wants to leave. Is she going to be okay?” The male nurse looked at the doctor who turned and looked at her patient. Hand on her patient’s arm she calls over her shoulder: ”Of course she is. She’s one of mine. She’s made of sterner stuff.”

I never did get the name of that doctor. All I know is that she was either an Aussie or a Kiwi who spent 10 years in London and trained at St Thomas’s Hospital. Oh, and she left the UK because it was getting too expensive and she doesn’t know how anyone can afford to live there anymore. So when she said “she’s one of mine” I assume she meant that we are fellow Londoners.

Whatever she meant I was relieved when the doctor told me I could leave the medical tent and walk the six or so blocks to Pershing Square where I was due to meet my friends.

You see I did finish the marathon. Thank God! But, in typical Marissa fashion, I couldn’t do so without creating a bit of drama at the end. Within seconds of crossing the finish line I realised that I felt a bit odd. My arms were tingling. I was a bit disorientated. I felt like I wanted to vomit and the last thing I wanted to do was drink water.

Finishing the LA Marathon is a bit like going through a birth canal. But instead of landing in the hands of a midwife you are shunted along while arms come at you from either side. On goes your medal. In one hand a bottle of water is thrust. A bag of sliced apples or a banana are at the ready for your other hand. If you make it through that in one piece then another pair of hands emerge guiding you – almost like they are directing traffic – to the line where you wait to get your official picture taken. Smile, click-click, flash, you’re done. Now you’re supposed to go out into the world, reborn – a marathon runner.

Except, I didn’t feel like that. The first thing I saw in this new world was a fireman with a huge wheelchair. I was so exhausted that I couldn’t flirt so it’s no surprise that he refused to push me the six or so blocks through Downtown LA to meet my mates. “But I’ll take you to the medical tent,” he said. How kind…

And that’s how I met the Aussie/Kiwi doctor. Lying on a stretcher in an underground car-park turned makeshift emergency room I had at least two nurses and one doctor try in vain to find a vein in my arms so they could put me on an IV.

They said I was dehydrated but I think – and my coach agrees – that I drank too much water and thus disturbed the careful balance of electrolytes in my body. I sweat like a pig so I wasn’t replenishing my salt fast enough. The doctor and nurses abandoned the IV idea after spending about 15-20 minutes trying to find a vein and gave me a cup of Gatorade (the American equivalent of Lucozade) to drink instead. That did the trick and I was discharged with instructions to call 911 if my condition worsened.

In hindsight it sounds comical – and I have been joking about it with my friends. But I could have died. Drinking too much water can be just as deadly as not drinking enough water. That’s one thing that I would advise anyone intending to run a marathon to pay attention to – their water intake.

Because I DO think that running a marathon is worthwhile. It was something that I secretly always wanted to do before I died and I’m glad that I’ve done it. The big day itself was fabulous, the atmosphere, the crowds. I saw parts of LA that I’ve never seen before in the three years since I’ve been here. I ran through Korea Town, South Central, Downtown, around Universal Studios and outside the Olympic Stadium.

It was like a carnival and I was part of the parade. Hundreds of Angelenos left their front doors and cheered the runners on. Little kids, toddlers even, held out their hands so that we could high-five them as we ran past. There were live bands and stereo systems with musicians and DJs blaring everything from salsa to hip-hop.

Strangers were calling me by name saying: “Way to go Marissa. You can do it.” And if they weren’t shouting they were offering sliced oranges on a tray, or maybe suntan lotion or Vaseline slathered on a piece of cardboard. The idea was a person would hold up the cardboard and if a runner needed some lotion or Vaseline they would just run up and slide their hands down the cardboard.

This may explain why I ended up in the medical tent. Having been inside a couple of the portable loos and, knowing that few runners had washed or sanitised their hands, I had no desire to suck on an orange that other people had fingered. I knew where their hands had been and I didn’t want their germs in my mouth.

I digress. I only got annoyed with one supporter who decided to shout out at mile 20: “Come on runners. You’ve only got six more miles to go. That’s a piece of cake.” Clearly I was flagging by then because I didn’t have the energy to grab that misguided woman by the neck and shake her until she realised that 20 PLUS six miles is NOT a piece of cake.

In fact whereas eight miles felt like nothing at the beginning of the race a single step felt like climbing Mount Everest by the end and it took all the strength I could muster to cross the finish line. But I did…

For me the best thing about running the marathon was not the day itself but the six months beforehand. Training for the marathon while raising money to fight AIDS in LA and abroad strengthened more than just my calf muscles. With the help of my friends and family I have raised – at the last count – about $1,761. (Thank you to each and every one of you who contributed your time, money and support.)

I have proven that I can be a group leader without being bossy or bitchy. Never again can I say that I am undisciplined because there were times when the last thing in the world I wanted to do was run but I forced myself to do it to get the training in.

Most importantly, however, I’ve made some dear friends each of whom I will miss seeing at 8 o’clock on a Saturday morning.

So for me the marathon wasn’t just those six hours and 16 minutes of running on Sunday March 2, 2008. It was that and a whole lot more.

Those closest to me know that, in the last three years, I have faced some of the greatest challenges of my life. There was a time when opening my eyes in the morning to welcome a new day was a huge effort. But I guess the doctor was right. I’ve surprised myself. I am made of sterner stuff…

Happy 2008 guys.

I know, I’ve been a bit slack lately and haven’t updated my page for a while. What is it that John Lennon once said? “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” Somewhere buried in those words is my apology for being away for so long.

One thing I haven’t given up on though is training for the LA marathon. I’m still pounding the streets of Marina Del Rey, Venice and Santa Monica – on my own and with my running group. It’s fun. It’s amazing how much a group of women can discuss while running say…um…20 miles.

And, yes, I have run 20 miles. I couldn’t sit down for the rest of that day because if I stayed in one place for too long my joints seized up! But, the point is, I finished a 20-mile run and I’m very proud of myself.

In a couple of weeks I’m going to do the ’23-miler’ – as we call it. I cringe when I look for directions on MapQuest only to discover that it’s going to take me 23 miles to drive from Point A to Point B. Now I’m going to run that distance in my spare time.

My Friday afternoon conversations with my colleagues at work these days are quite funny. “What are you doing this weekend, Marissa?” is the standard question. I say: “Well, I’m going to run 20-plus miles on Saturday…” I feel quite chuffed when they look at me as if I’m Wonder Woman.

Why? A) Because I feel virtuous about going for a run rather than having a Saturday morning lie-in and a fry-up and B) because I always wanted to wear that sexy little outfit Lynda Carter wore in the 1970s TV series.

What do you think? Four months into my training I reckon I can wriggle into a pair of bright blue knickers and stuff my ample bosom into a red and gold bustier…

You know you have a problem when you’re hanging out of your kitchen cupboard, teaspoon in one hand, jar of Nutella in the other, licking the silverware like it’s a lollypop dipped in chocolate.

You don’t even have the decency to sit down to pretend you’re having a civilised snack! You’re just scooping. It’s a ritual. Like a gravedigger shovelling dirt you do it without thinking.

That is what this Thanksgiving weekend has reduced me to. After four days of overindulgence I can now scribble two deadly sins off my list – sloth and gluttony.

But, as tempting as it was to hide under the duvet, I forced myself to get out of my bed on Saturday morning to run 7 miles with my marathon training group. It is called a ‘recovery run’ because the week before we ran 14 miles so the shorter distance is supposed to give your body a rest.

That’s how far I’ve come. Three months ago I would have cried at the thought of running 7 miles, now I look forward to it because it seems less daunting than 14 – or 17 miles, which is next week’s goal.

I’m proud of myself. Running 14 miles sounds impressive but sometimes it’s the smaller achievements that mean the most. Every time I force myself to go to the gym or do a maintenance run when I’m dog-tired is a miracle. I’m naturally lazy. I can list 10 ‘I can’t go to the gym’ excuses in 30 seconds but I ignore them and grab my sneakers.

Part of the reason I do so is because of the money that I have raised thus far. That proves to me my family and friends believe I can run 26.2 miles. And now that I have reached – and surpassed – my fundraising target of $1,500 I have 1521.2 reasons to train and no excuses not to.

Thank you all for your support. To express my gratitude I will donate a separate $150 to The Dominic Pardey Trust. [See my Facebook page for details of the Trust.]

Lots of love,

Nice term, isn’t it? Clearly a) I’m sick and b) I’ve gone through my weight in snotty tissues – and that’s a lot of tissues. Ask Kleenex employees. They’ve all received bonuses because of the sudden surge in sales…

Trouble is, I have a dilemma. What do you do with tissues once you’ve blown your nose? Do you put them in the recycle bin or sling them in the trash? In this ‘Green’ age what do you do with all things green…?

I digress. I have sinusitis, which means that I woke on Tuesday morning with aching muscles; swollen glands, coughing, spluttering and moaning so much you’d have thought I had some deadly disease.

Fortunately I didn’t. But now Marissa the Perfectionist faces a big challenge: forcing herself to rest – not run – her way through this illness. It’s hard. The temptation is to jump into my sneakers and hit the road.

Fortunately, I’m flying to Spain this afternoon with five of my old university mates and I know that if I even attempt to push my sick black behind while we’re on holiday they’ll all jump on me – well, everyone apart from Griffin who isn’t a touchy-feely person.

Maybe she’ll sit on top of the pile – glass of sangria in her hand, sunhat plopped on her head…

A funny thing happened to me the other day. I was shopping in my local Trader Joe’s one evening after work. It had been a long day and the last thing I wanted to do was traipse around a supermarket buying healthy food pretending that I was going to cook for myself.

But somehow I convinced myself that I was saving money and as a 31-year-old woman, buying groceries and preparing meals are what I ought to be doing rather than thinking: “I can’t be arsed” and taking my car to the local McDonald’s ‘drivethru’ or moaning because my Thai take away or Pink Dot spaghetti carbonara is 10 minutes too late.

Wandering around the produce section, feeling pleased with myself I bump into a woman who looked familiar. Like me she had a cute chubby face. She was dressed smartly, as though she worked in an office – her arms stuffed inside the pockets of a dark three quarter-length jacket.
Her brown hair was parted to the side and hung just around her shoulders.

We both mumbled ‘sorry’ in unison and looked at each other. Her eyes lit up. I surveyed her face, thought ‘yes’, ‘no’ then started to walk away. Something made me turn around again and as I started saying, “Are you…?” my eyes studied her lips and I said: “Genevieve? Is that you?”

Now, I hasten to add, I didn’t pay such close attention to her lips because I wanted to snog her in the middle of the fruit and vegetable section. (I don’t swing that way and even if I did, I’m not THAT crazy! Can you imagine? Sucking someone’s face when an old dear is rooting through the bananas or squishing the mangoes to see if they’re ripe?)

No, I hovered around her lips because that’s all I recognised. You see, this was Genevieve, one of the women from my pace group that I run with on Saturday mornings.
Usually when I ‘see’ her she’s in her workout gear. On training days her hair is scrapped back into a ponytail, her head partially hidden under a cap. I never see her eyes, ‘cos she covers them with her Chanel sunglasses.

The only parts of her face that are visible are her chubby cheeks and her lips. And even though we had been running together for the past five weeks she only recognised me by looking at my green eyes. Weird, huh?

“Yes, running is an expensive hobby,” said the sales girl at the Top-to-Top sports store on Friday afternoon.

“Flaming Nora! Why didn’t someone tell me that before?” I thought. I’m rather old-fashioned. Say the word ‘run’ and the term ‘P.E. kit’ comes to mind. It’s very simple – a pair of shorts, a T-shirt, socks, sneakers and a bobble to tie your hair back. End of.

Naturally when I signed up for the LA Marathon I thought all I would need is a new pair of trainers. Fine. I’m okay with that. A hundred bucks for comfy sneakers to make sure I’m not walking like Quasimodo the day after the marathon sounds like a bargain to me.
I’ve been working out for a while now so there is no need to buy a whole wardrobe of sports bras. The boobies are doing fine. They’re being kept in place.

What I didn’t expect was to have to buy a new gadget every week. Since training began I have acquired the following:

1 pair of sneakers.

3 pairs of workout pants (leggings) that magically remove the sweat from your skin keeping you (I’m reliably informed) cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

1 fancy dancy watch to make sure that my pace group isn’t running too fast.

1 water bottle bag complete with a little pocket to hold personal items.

A supply of sports snacks – including gooey protein gels, jellybeans and sachets of powder full of electrolytes that you put in your water.

Oh – and I almost forgot my most recent purchase – a pair of special sports socks that prevent blisters.

It is at this point when I’m armed with my new snacks, socks and bum-bag with the bright yellow water bottle that I turn to the sales girl and say: “This running malarkey is going to make me bankrupt!”

It makes me think. Am I soft touch? Are all these things really essential or am I like my mother who has to have the most high tech gadget even if she doesn’t know how to operate it? I think there is a bit of the latter in there.

Take last week for example. I lead the pace group back to Shutters where we meet Coach Mark on Santa Monica boardwalk. I’m feeling smug because, unlike the week before, my watch is actually pinging at the right time so I know when to run and when to walk. Shame soon followed though when Coach says to me: “Pace group leader? What’s the chrono?”

“The who? The what?” I ask. “What are you talking about?”

“How can you be the pace group leader and not know what the chrono is?” he says, his voice laced with sarcasm.

“Ah, um, because no one told me what it is…?” I reply. Coach Mark explains – slowly so even I can understand – that each week I have to tell him how long it took us to do our run. Fortunately he had kept a note of when we left so he knew how long we were out there but the point was that I should have known too. (Slapped wrists for Marissa!)

Bemused, I thrust my wrist under his nose, point at my watch and say: “Show me how to do this chrono business. What is it now?”

Typical – I buy the best sports watch available in my price range and I haven’t a clue how to use it; a point not lost on my running mate, Phyllis. She had to spend most of our 4-mile run two weeks ago stopping to re-start my ‘malfunctioning’ watch, which wasn’t malfunctioning at all. I hadn’t bothered to learn how to set it properly. I let the salesperson in the shop do it instead.

So when I told Phyllis on Saturday that my game plan was to run 20 miles on marathon day at the 3:2 run/walk ratio and do the last 6 miles at a 3:1 pace, she gave me a sly look and said: “Really? Well, you’d better learn how to use your watch by then hadn’t you.” Ouch. M x

I’ve decided that running a marathon is like going on a diet. Everyone pays minute attention to what you put in your mouth and how often you move your body.

For example, I found myself having an odd conversation with my friend Paul recently. He’s a man’s man. A Northern lad who wouldn’t be seen dead doing yoga and who took an instant dislike to someone I was seeing after the guy whipped out a guitar and serenaded me on our first date.

So I was a bit taken aback when Paul offered to buy me a new sports bra last week. Let me explain. It was 5 o’clock on a Thursday afternoon. My brain was out of the office and my body was about to follow suit when our chat began.

Paul to Marissa: “What are you up to this evening? How’s the running going? Are you going to the gym?”

Marissa to Paul: “No. Not tonight.”

Paul to Marissa: “What! Why not? You’re slacking.”

Marissa to Paul: “Because all of my sports bras need washing.”

Paul to Marissa: “That is a pathetic excuse Charles. I’m going to buy you a new sports bra right now just so you can go to the gym tonight!”

What? I should have said ‘yes’. Sports bras are expensive and if Paul’s willing to give me one for free who am I to quibble? Most people prefer to sponsor me by throwing a few cents my way. Then again, I did say that all types of support are welcome…

Then there are the ‘food Nazis’, the ones who catch you the minute you put something in your mouth ready to give you tips on what is good or bad for your body now that you are “in training”. Suddenly, every cat and dog is a top sports nutritionist.

Let me give you a little taste of what life has been like in the office recently.

Monday September 10
Kevin, my boss, practically somersaults down my throat when he sees me munching on a hot dog. “That’s not part of your diet,” he says.
I pointed out to him that a) I am not on a diet and b) I was eating a turkey hot dog. It was hardly a Big Mac.

Wednesday September 12
I stroll downstairs with my Thai take away. I’m feeling smug because chicken and cashew nuts with brown rice for lunch isn’t that bad, especially as I’m only having half a portion.
But, before I could even get to the kitchen, Chris A from downstairs seizes upon me. “Aha!” he says. “That doesn’t smell like part of a marathon runner’s diet.”
He makes this assertion before I’ve even opened the take out box! He has no idea what I’m having for lunch. All he knows is that it doesn’t smell right…

A lot of responsibility comes with training for a marathon and I’ve felt that rising with every dime, dollar, pound and cent that my friends are kindly donating.
I never thought I’d have to be discreet about what I ate and what I did (or didn’t do) though. It’s funny and reminds me how much my friends care and have got into the spirit of things.

But, to quote Maya Angelou: “Now I know why the caged bird sings.” I feel sorry for lardy celebs who are ‘papped’ nibbling on peanuts. Oh, those pesky photographers! Why won’t they just go away?

It’s a hard life but somebody’s got to live it… M x
